Papua New Guinea remains one of the most fascinating and distinctive coffee origins in the world. Unlike many producing countries where coffee is cultivated on large estates, the majority of PNG’s coffee comes from thousands of smallholder farmers who tend small “coffee gardens” alongside their family crops. These farms, often no larger than one or two hectares, are deeply woven into the culture, livelihood, and traditions of the communities that produce them.
Our Kunjin lot is sourced from a network of dedicated smallholder producers in the Western Highlands, where coffee is grown at high elevations under ideal conditions for developing sweetness, complexity, and vibrant acidity. Farmers carefully hand-pick ripe cherries before delivering them to centralized washing stations, where the coffee undergoes meticulous washed processing to highlight clarity and balance in the cup.
At Pallet, we are continually searching for coffees that not only demonstrate exceptional quality but also tell an authentic story of place and people. Kunjin stood out on the cupping table for its remarkable cleanliness, layered sweetness, and elegant structure—qualities that reflect both the unique terroir of Papua New Guinea and the dedication of the producers behind it.
While this coffee is produced by many small farms rather than a single estate, it represents the collective effort of a community committed to quality. The lot is primarily composed of Arusha, Bourbon, and Typica varieties, offering a cup that is expressive, refined, and unmistakably Papua New Guinean.
This is a coffee that reminds us why we continue to explore origins like PNG: extraordinary flavour born from extraordinary circumstances, and a direct connection to the people whose work makes it possible.
